These 'Asian Fan' earrings by Independent Artisans are a simple and elegant accessory. Designed by Lalana, these sterling silver stud earrings resemble a "handheld fan." The precious metal is engraved with subtle, radiating grooves in a gleaming high-polish finish. This piece blends traditional designs with contemporary style and creates sustainable livelihoods for artisans.
Born in Northern Thailand into a large family of ten siblings, Lalana Thawiaphiradimani grew up with modest means but strong values of perseverance and community. At 18 she left home in search of opportunity, working as a maid before saving enough to pursue her own path. Introduced to Karen hill tribe silver jewelry by her mother’s friend, she quickly fell in love with its intricate motifs and cultural depth. Since 1986, she has dedicated herself to the craft, collaborating with more than 100 families, including Karen silversmiths, to produce jewelry that blends traditional designs with contemporary style. Many of the silver beads feature signature Karen symbols—flowers, fish, and geometric patterns—woven into macramé or minimal jewelry ideal for daily wear. Beyond artistry, Lalana is proud to have created sustainable livelihoods for her collaborators, ensuring that every piece reflects not only heritage and beauty, but also community resilience.
Handcrafted in 925 sterling silver, these post earrings have a high-polish finish and measure 0.5 inches in length by 0.9 inches in width.
