These 'Balinese Jackfruit' Sterling Silver and Amethyst Dangle Earrings by Independent Artisans showcase the specialty of Balinese jewelry: sterling silver granulation. In this traditional art form, tiny spheres of metal called jawan are painstakingly applied, one by one, to create a textured surface. These granulated details are surrounded by a rope design called tali air. Faceted amethysts totaling 3 1/2 karats complete the design.
Born in Bali and fascinated by jewelry since elementary school, this artisan began learning the craft through the guidance of a friend’s silversmith parents. By junior high, he was already creating his own pieces, and after finishing high school he opened a small workshop. His courage and determination allowed him to sell to local art shops, steadily growing his reputation for quality and design. Marriage and family life briefly paused his craft, but financial necessity and passion soon brought him back. A large commission after his wedding allowed him to expand his workshop, hiring others to meet demand while upholding rigorous quality standards. His jewelry reflects a balance of creativity and precision, with each design carefully crafted to satisfy loyal clients. For him, jewelry-making is more than a livelihood—it is a lifelong calling rooted in perseverance, artistry, and the desire to share beauty with the world.
