This Recycled Glass Beaded Stretch Bracelet from Ghana 'Bold Ohene' by Independent Artisans is a regal stretch bracelet with a bold spiral design. Ghanaian artisan Esther Darko carefully strings petite beads of brown recycled glass to create a powerful and elegant look. The bracelet is named Ohene, meaning 'king' in Akan, and carries the vibrant tradition of Ghanaian beadwork while promoting recycling and empowerment in the community.
Born in Ghana’s Eastern Region in 1955, this artisan has devoted her life to the art of beadwork. Introduced to the craft by her mother, she mastered it through study and years of practice, drawn to the beauty of natural colors and shapes. For 38 years, she taught primary school, passing on jewelry-making skills to her students, before dedicating herself fully to her own workshop after retiring in 2012. Using locally sourced beads and natural materials, she creates waist beads, necklaces, and bracelets inspired by her surroundings. Beyond artistry, she has supported her children and educated girls in her community, extending her impact through both craft and mentorship. Her joy comes from seeing others wear her designs, each piece carrying the vibrant tradition of Ghanaian beadwork and the spirit of empowerment she embodies.
Handcrafted from recycled glass beads, this stretch bracelet measures 6.8 inches L x 0.8 inches W.
