These 'Precious Canoes' dangle earrings by Independent Artisans are a beautiful and intricate expression of Balinese craftsmanship. Designed by Made Sugi, the sterling silver earrings resemble elegant canoes, each cradling a natural malachite gemstone. The intricate openwork scroll patterns are classic Balinese motifs that require great precision and skill. The earrings embody the artist's motto to "never give up," and are a meaningful and distinctive piece of jewelry that keeps the silversmithing tradition alive.
Born in Bali in 1975, Made Sugi was raised in a community where silversmithing thrives. Inspired by her surroundings, she learned the craft after helping in her husband’s workshop, gradually moving from cleaning and shaping silver to designing her own pieces. Together, they now lead a workshop of 15 artisans who use traditional tools to create intricate designs in silver, gemstones, and pearls. Her jewelry often features classic Balinese motifs such as jawan (silver bubbles) and bun (swirls), patterns that require great precision and skill. Despite personal challenges, including an injury to her hand, Made lives by the motto “never give up.” Her creations embody Balinese culture and artistry, offering jewelry that is both meaningful and distinctive. Through her work, she hopes to keep the silversmithing tradition alive for future generations.
Handcrafted in Indonesia with 925 sterling silver and malachite, these 1.8-inch dangle earrings have a combination finish and hook earwires.
