These Handcrafted Sterling Silver Button Earrings from Africa 'African Initiative' by Independent Artisans are a beautiful and meaningful accessory. Designed by Joycelyn Sena Zigah, the earrings interpret a Ghanaian adinkra symbol called Nkyinkim, which means to twist or turn oneself around. It is a symbol of initiative, dynamism, and versatility, and signifies the ability to withstand difficulties and play many roles in life. The piece, which is made of polished sterling silver, reflects the artisan's discipline and resilience in a male-dominated field.
Sena, whose name in the Ewe language means “bringing heaven to earth,” was born in Adidome in Ghana’s Volta Region. Growing up surrounded by beads and jewelry through her mother’s trade, she was drawn to the arts from an early age. After earning a bachelor’s degree in metal design and fabrication from the University of Science and Technology in 1986, she honed her skills as a jeweler before continuing her studies at the prestigious School of Jewelry in Birmingham, UK. On returning to Ghana, Sena became head of a jewelry workshop, later founding her own studio where she now mentors apprentices and trains university students. Known for her discipline and resilience in a male-dominated field, she creates elegant designs in precious metals while inspiring the next generation of jewelers in Ghana.
Handcrafted in Ghana with sterling silver, these post earrings have a high-polish finish. Each earring measures 1.2 inches in length and 0.6 inches in width.
