These Coconut Shell and Bamboo Dangle Earrings 'Medieval Bells' by Nonyem Abena Ibeneme are shaped like bells, with their organic colors and style evoking the feeling of medieval architecture. Ghanaian artisan Nonyem Abena Ibeneme, a former lawyer, creates this unique pair by combining the rich natural beauty of coconut shell and bamboo. Her work with recycled elements is a deeply personal expression, offering a wearable piece of art that bridges heritage, sustainability, and individuality.
Born in Lagos in 1960 to a Nigerian father and Ghanaian mother, this designer began her career in law, practicing for more than a decade in both Nigeria and Ghana before turning to her lifelong passion for art. Her creative journey in jewelry began in 1993, inspired by a treasured inheritance of antique beads from her mother. Self-taught yet highly observant, she explores diverse techniques and materials, often incorporating recycled elements into her distinctive designs. Each piece is imagined as wearable art, unique and deeply personal. Beyond her own collections, she works with artisans and mentors young women who lack educational opportunities, teaching them jewelry-making as a means to earn income and regain confidence. With her work showcased internationally at exhibitions such as Tendence Lifestyle in Frankfurt, she continues to create jewelry that bridges heritage, sustainability, and individuality.
Handcrafted from coconut shell and bamboo with waxed linen thread, these dangle earrings weigh 0.35 oz and measure 3.6 inches L x 1.3 inches W. They are fitted with brass hooks.
