This 'Native Designs' by Independent Artisans is a fabulous multicolored cuff bracelet. Crafted by Alvaro Ratzan using the peyote bead weaving technique, the bracelet features a base made from leather and a back made from suede. The beautiful geometric patterns are created with Czech glass beads, making the piece a vessel of tradition and artistry.
Born in 1980 in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, Alvaro Ratzán grew up in a family where craft was both livelihood and legacy. His mother pioneered macramé bracelet-making in their town, while his father balanced farming, painting, and eventually jewelry. From childhood, Alvaro helped string and sell bracelets, learning the discipline and pride of artisan life. Over time, he developed his own workshop, leading a production chain that merges traditional Mayan embroidery and beading with modern accessory design. Inspired by the handwoven huipiles of his community, his bracelets often incorporate motifs of birds, flowers, and geometric figures. Today, he works alongside his sister and a network of artisans, creating pieces that carry both artistry and emotion. For Alvaro, each handmade piece is more than jewelry—it is a vessel of tradition, sacrifice, and care. His dream is to expand opportunities for artisans, ensuring fair wages and lasting dignity through craft.
This cuff bracelet is crafted from leather, glass beads, suede, and aluminum wire. It measures 7.3 inches L (end to end) x 1.8 inches W.
