These Artisan Crafted Beaded Earrings by Independent Artisans, titled 'Empress,' are a beautiful creation from Ghanaian designer Elizabeth Alorchie-Apetor. Named Nene, meaning 'empress' in the Ewe language, these earrings are designed in an opulent waterfall style. The artisan combines terracotta and bauxite beads, showcasing a rich earthy palette. The brass hooks provide a durable and elegant finish. These earrings embody the artisan's dedication to her craft and her mission to empower other women through beading, reflecting a beautiful blend of heritage and innovation.
Elizabeth, a jewelry designer from Accra, discovered her passion for beads as a child, inspired by her mother’s dedication to traditional threading. By the age of nine she was already stringing her own strands, a pastime she cherished alongside her studies. After twenty-one years as a civil servant, she left her career to dedicate herself fully to jewelry, guided by faith and a desire to spend more time with her family. With only a modest starting capital, she built her beaded jewelry venture into a thriving craft, working with materials such as glass, wood, clay, coconut shell, stone, recycled plastic, and metals. Beyond her own creations, she trains apprentices, including women with physical challenges, empowering them to earn independently. Today, Elizabeth continues to grow her practice, blending heritage and innovation while preparing the next generation of her family to carry her artistry forward.
Handcrafted in Ghana, these hook earrings are made from ceramic, bauxite, and brass hooks, measuring 2 inches L x 0.8 inches W.
