These Taifa Tangerine earrings by Akwele Suma Glory are more than just a pop of color; they are a symbol of energy and unity. The chunky, bright tangerine beads have a secret: they are crafted from recycled paper. With an eye for environmental mindfulness, the Ghanaian artist created this design to connect wearers to a larger social message. As Akwele herself states, the color orange ""denotes energy"" and ""connects us to join forces and fight against injustices in our society."" These earrings are a powerful blend of personal expression and social purpose, making each piece a meaningful and spirited statement.
Akwele Suma Glory is a multi award-winning Ghanaian mixed-media artist whose work spans painting, sculpture, and ethnic jewelry design. A graduate of the Ghana Institute of Journalism, she began her career in communications before dedicating herself fully to art. She refined her craft under the mentorship of Chris Charway in Ghana, Kossi Assou in Togo, and Werner Register in Germany, developing a signature style defined by experimental materials, layered concepts, and a deeply spiritual approach. For more than a decade, Akwele has created jewelry that blends cultural heritage with contemporary expression, earning national and international recognition. With five solo shows, more than forty group exhibitions, and leadership roles in professional arts organizations, she continues to push creative boundaries. Rooted in faith and inspired by nature, her pieces embody gratitude, resilience, and a vision of art as a bridge to the world.
Handcrafted in Ghana, these hook earrings are made from recycled paper, recycled plastic, and brass hooks. They measure 1.6 inches in length and 0.8 inches in width, with a total weight of 0.25 oz.
