This Mahal Navratan Ring by Donatella Balsamo draws on the ancient Indian Navratna tradition of nine gemstones corresponding symbolically to nine celestial bodies. Diamond, sapphire, emerald, ruby, yellow sapphire, coral, pearl, hessonite and cat’s eye come together in one compact spherical form, creating a vivid mosaic of materials as well as a powerful cultural reference. Traditionally, Navratna jewellery is associated with balance and connection to the cosmos. Donatella’s interpretation preserves that talismanic idea while giving the historic gemstone grouping a contemporary gold-vermeil setting designed for modern wear.
