The Ocean Dream Diamond

The Ocean Dream Diamond is the only diamond to possess the rare color combination of a dark rich blue and a radiant green, thereby making it one of the rarest diamonds on Earth. Gemologists usually associate this color with artificial enhancement and it is just one of Nature’s surprises that the Ocean Dream Diamond possesses this hue naturally. There is no record of any other diamond with this color.
The uniquely colored diamond was mined not too long ago in central Africa in 2002. Unfortunately, little else is publicly known about its discovery. The 11.17 carats rough gemstone was polished into a 5.50 carats triangular modified brilliant cut diamond. As its colour evoked memories of the ocean, Cora Diamond Corporation named it the Ocean Dream Diamond.
Despite being smaller in size when compared to other rare and precious diamonds, the Ocean Dream Diamond sets itself apart by its exceptional blue-green color. It is also considered relatively large for a diamond of its color. Blue-green diamonds are already extremely unusual, a blue-green diamond of this size even more so.
Testing was conducted on the Ocean Dream Diamond by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) in 2003. Through scientific evaluation, the GIA confirmed its exquisite hue was indeed an extraordinary natural occurrence and not artificially enhanced in any way but a result of millions of years and exposure to natural radiation. The GIA classified the diamond’s color as a Fancy Deep Blue-Green in 2003 and a couple of years later in 2014 as Fancy Vivid Blue-Green.
The magnificent diamond was displayed at the Smithsonian in 2003, as part of “The Splendor of Diamonds” exhibit.
In 2014, the Ocean Dream Diamond was auctioned at Christie's in Geneva, fetching an incredible $ 8.7 million! It was purchased by an anonymous buyer and we have not heard any news about it since. Perhaps one day we will. Until then, we can agree that it remains one of the most remarkable diamonds the world has ever seen.
