Why is this unique? Also known as dendritic opal (although there is no opal in the material), this gem is a chalcedony characterized by mineral inclusions that look like multi-branching tree-like forms – aka dendrites. Stemming from the Greek word for “tree", these pseudo-fossils form as naturally occurring fissures in the rock are filled by manganese-rich water flowing through, depositing minerals as it flows, which in turn crystalize into the fern-like patterns. The finest material hails from Turkey.
