The Pink Star Diamond is one of the most extraordinary gems in the world, renowned for its unparalleled beauty, size, and value. This magnificent pink diamond has captured the imagination of collectors, gemologists, and jewelry enthusiasts alike, earning its place as a symbol of rarity and luxury. From its origins as a rough stone to its record-breaking auction, the Pink Star Diamond’s story is one of exceptional craftsmanship and timeless allure.

The Discovery and Origins of the Pink Star Diamond

The Pink Star Diamond, originally known as the Steinmetz Pink, was discovered by De Beers in 1999 in South Africa. Weighing an incredible 132.5 carats in its rough form, it was already an extraordinary find, but its transformation into a finished gemstone would make history.

Over two years of meticulous cutting and polishing by the Steinmetz Group resulted in the breathtaking gemstone we know today. The Pink Star emerged as a 59.60-carat oval mixed-cut diamond, achieving an unprecedented combination of size, clarity, and vibrant pink color. It was first unveiled to the public in 2003 at a private ceremony in Monaco and quickly became a global sensation.

What Makes the Pink Star Diamond Unique?

The Pink Star’s uniqueness lies in its exceptional size, color, and purity. The Gemological Institute of America (GIA) graded it as a Fancy Vivid Pink diamond—the highest possible color rating for pink diamonds. This hue is extremely rare, with fewer than 2% of all diamonds displaying a pink color, let alone at this level of saturation.

Adding to its rarity, the Pink Star is classified as Type IIa, meaning it contains no nitrogen impurities, which is a hallmark of the purest and most chemically perfect diamonds. Its flawless cut further enhances its brilliance, ensuring it captures light in a way that mesmerizes all who see it.

The Pink Star’s Record-Breaking Auction

The Pink Star set the jewelry world ablaze in April 2017, when it sold at auction for a staggering $71.2 million at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong. This sale made it the most expensive diamond or gemstone ever sold at auction, surpassing previous records held by other famous gemstones such as the Oppenheimer Blue and the Graff Pink.

The diamond was purchased by Chow Tai Fook Enterprises, a prominent Hong Kong-based jewelry retailer, and renamed the CTF Pink Star in honor of the company’s founder and the chairman’s father. The sale underscored the increasing demand for colored diamonds, particularly in Asia, where rare gemstones are seen as both status symbols and investments.

The Appeal of Pink Diamonds

Pink diamonds are among the rarest and most sought-after gemstones in the world, often commanding higher prices than their white counterparts. Unlike white diamonds, whose color is determined by trace elements, the pink hue is believed to result from a distortion in the diamond’s crystal lattice during its formation.

The rarity of pink diamonds is further accentuated by the closure of the Argyle Mine in Australia, which once produced the majority of the world’s pink diamonds. With fewer high-quality pink diamonds entering the market, the value of exceptional gemstones like the Pink Star continues to rise.

The Pink Star’s Legacy

The Pink Star Diamond is more than a record-breaking gemstone—it represents the pinnacle of natural beauty and human craftsmanship. Its vibrant pink hue and flawless cut make it a marvel of nature and a testament to the skill of the artisans who shaped it.

The diamond has also set a new benchmark in the world of high-value collectibles, highlighting the growing appreciation for colored diamonds as both artistic treasures and financial assets. It remains a source of inspiration for jewelers and gemologists, symbolizing the enduring allure of rare and exceptional gemstones.

A Gem Like No Other

The Pink Star Diamond’s journey from a rough stone to a global icon is a testament to its rarity and magnificence. Its vibrant color, immense size, and flawless craftsmanship make it one of the most extraordinary diamonds ever discovered. It's a true symbol of beauty, luxury, and record-breaking achievement. Whether admired for its sheer brilliance or its unrivaled value, the Pink Star is a gemstone that will be celebrated for generations to come, embodying the timeless appeal of the finest treasures Earth has to offer.
